WHAT IS GINSENG

Ginseng belongs to the Araliales plant family. The name ginseng, stems form the Greek language and means “all healing”. There are many species of ginseng but the two most commonly used are Siberian ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticosus) and Korean ginseng (Panax quinquefolius).

The most popular and thoroughly researched is the Panax Ginseng. Panax also known as Korean, Chinese and Asian Ginseng is characterized by the presence of ginsenosides. Ginsenosides have been research in depth, as they are the active compounds behind Ginseng's efficiency. Ginsenosides are able to affect multiple pathways, for example they can have a relaxing mental effect while at the same time a physical stimulating effect.

Ginseng grows best in the cooler eastern Asian and Siberian climates. It can grow between 60 and 80 centimeters high. The leaves are finger-like in appearances which open up like hands. The root’s forked shape looks almost like human legs, and this is how Ginseng got its name: “ginseng“ is derived from the Chinese “jen shen“ which can be translated as “human root“.

Ginseng is used worldwide to increases the body's resistance to stress, trauma, anxiety, and fatigue. It has been used for centuries for its aphrodisiac strength. It is also commonly used for its powerful energy, immune system, memory and performance stimulanting properties. Oriental medicine believes that ginseng is their number one necessary ingredient in all their best prescriptions, and regards it as a cure all. Eastern medicine has been using it for many years to remove both mental and bodily fatigue, cure pulmonary complaints, and to break up and dissolve tumors.

HISTORY OF GINSENG
In 1842 Carl Anton Meyer a German-Russian botanist officially named the Korean ginseng “Panax C A Meyer”. He used the name, Panax, which is derived from the Greek "panakeia," which means universal remedy.

In 1860, Minnesota began to export its wild Ginseng to China. In the late 1800’s Ginseng began to domesticate the crop. Since then more than 90% of the cultivated ginseng grown in the United States is grown in Wisconsin, helping to supply America’s 10% of the world's total supply of ginseng root.
